Health Care Assistant (Class Starting September 2016 based on Provincial HCA 2015 Curriculum)
Program Description
This experiential program prepares Students with advanced skills necessary to provide safe care to Residents / Clients in various health care settings. Students will also learn to provide personal care, perform simple nursing procedures, communicate with patients, family members and other staff members, and provide companionship and comfort to residents / clients. HCA's also receive training in Lifts and Transfers, W.H.M.I.S, First Aid and CPR Level "C" or "HCP" and Food Safe Level 1.

    Admission Requirements:
    Grade 12 graduation, or 19 years of age or older with successful entrance assessment and completion of the following:

  • Proof of English Language Competency Requirements as per BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry Criteria as detailed at web site http://www.cachwr.bc.ca/getattachment/Educators/English-Language-Competency_HCA-Program-Entry.pdf.aspx
  • Pre-admission application and interview
  • Criminal records check from Ministry of Justice including clearance to work with vulnerable adults, or proof that the process of acquiring this is in progress
  • Prior to the First Practice Education Experience: Clear TB test or chest X-ray completed and returned to school, Immunizations required by Industry, Satisfactory Certificate of Health from Physician

    Graduation Requirements:

  • DIPLOMA WITH DISTINCTION: Average score of 90% or higher, No score below 80% on any test, No retake on any test of the program, 70% pass mark for tests. Successful completion of Clinical Placement and Practicum.

  • DIPLOMA: Average score of 70% or higher and no score below 70% on any test, Not more than one retake on any test of the program, 70% pass mark for tests, maximum score of 70% will be awarded on first retake of same course, retakes in not more than 20% of the tests in program. Successful completion of Clinical Placement and Practicum.

    Graduates have a wide range of career opportunities in one-on-one settings or in group settings such as Long Term Care Facilities, Family Service Agencies, Private Home Care Agencies, Assisted Living Facilities, Community Health Care Agencies, Nursing Homes, Adult Day Care Centers.
